What is Kennel Cough?

Just what is kennel cough, exactly?

Technically, it is a very contagious illness that is characterized by a distinct cough, that is caused from inflammation in the upper respiratory system of dogs.

In everyday terms, it is equivalent to a chest cold, similar to what you see in people!

It can be a viral infection or a bacterial infection.

Both are airborne and are spread through coughing, sneezing, or contact with the germ, whether it is from direct contact, or from surfaces that an infected dog has touched.

It is highly contagious and your Golden Retriever could be exposed to it, before another dog is even showing any symptoms.

Regular canine vaccines, such as a 5 in 1, or a 7 in 1, offer some protection against kennel cough, as many strains of this infection, are caused by the parainfluenza virus.

You can also vaccinate your dog with a bordetella intranasal vaccine if you are around other dogs often.

Most cases of this illness do not last long, and other than some coughing and a sore throat, will quickly go away without any special treatment.

However, it can also progress to a more serious stage, such as turning into pneumonia, so you do need to be mindful of that fact, and keep a close eye on your Golden Retriever until it completely goes away.
